More often than not, I am a deep
thinker. When something hits my mind, it is left to scrutiny and inspection. Lately,
I have been thinking, what differentiates between those who have success and
those who don't? Why do some people go above and beyond, while
others simply quit? While whittling down the possibilities, one thing
stood out in my mind: motivation! You see, motivation seems to be a common
factor in the successful scenarios I have witnessed. Those who succeeded were
continuously motivated. The ones who gave up, or never really tried, were not.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary gives
these definitions of the word “Motivation:”
- the act or
process of giving someone a reason for doing something ; the act or
process of motivating someone
- the condition of being eager to act or work ; the
condition of being motivated
- a force or influence that causes someone to do
something
When someone is motivated there is a
purpose. There is an urgency and reason behind what is being done. An extra
push. A driving force. An eagerness to seek and complete goals.
Simply stated, motivation can drive one
to success! But how does one reach a state of being motivated. I mean if it’s
that simple, why aren't most people able to have a fruitful,
fulfilled life? The answer is that motivation must be applied often.
It does not simply come to a person, one must seek it.
Here are some tips on how to be and
stay motivated.
Days can get hectic! It happens to
me all the time. My schedule just gets away from me. Often when this happens, I
find myself annoyed, and I give up hope of accomplishing anything. When things
don't go our way or our routine is messed up, things are left unaccomplished.
This causes us to feel discouraged and unable to succeed. It is important
to keep track of your schedule. Get a calendar. Set up reminders on your phone.
Make a list. Be sure to put the hard items or the things you don't want to do
first! If you do the difficult tasks first, you won’t dread them the rest of
the day. Don't put things off! Personally, I find it best to use check lists.
By checking an item off, I am accomplishing a small goal, and throughout the
day I feel like I have accomplished more.
I am one of the worst at keeping up
with everything I need to do. When it comes down to it, I tend to put things
off until later. However, it is important to stay accountable. What you do will
have a consequence, whether good or bad. If you don't complete something by the
deadline, you are out of luck! When it comes to accountability, we as a society
have an obvious issue: we like to blame others or make excuses. When it comes
down to it, you and you alone control your own actions. When we cannot stay
accountable, we let things get out of control, thus losing motivation and
self-confidence. If you cannot be accountable for yourself, how can you hope to
stay motivated towards a goal?
So lovely readers, read that again. Above
all, having a good attitude is the most important part of being motivated. If
you have a positive outlook, you will likely have a more positive life. Take a
second, and smile, smile for a whole 10 seconds. Do you feel more positive?
Happy? I do! How you view things can really effect how you feel. You know that
person who is always negative? No matter what, something is just going wrong.
Are they fun to be around? Do they inspire others? No. So don't be that person,
because if they don't inspire others they sure aren't inspiring or motivating
themselves. A large part of is simply allowing yourself to be motivated,
inspired, joyful, and positive. When you open your mind to the great things you
can do, or purposely have an eagerness and drive, you're already on your way to
success!
Basically, how you stay organized,
keep an honest assessment of yourself, and seek ambition and positivity are how
you can gain and keep motivation.
To conclude, I leave you with yet another
amazing Zig Ziglar quote:
"People
often say motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing. That's why we
recommend it daily."
